Boston Weather: Freezing rain, icy conditions to start the week, potential for snow around New Year’s

The Boston region is in for bouts of mixed winter weather throughout the coming week, starting with freezing rain and icy conditions into Monday, before cold temperatures arrive along with snow potential around the mid-week holidays, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“If you’re planning on traveling late (Sunday) and early Monday morning, just make sure you take it slow out there on the road,” said meteorologist Caitlyn Mensch. “Or even if … you’re just getting out of your house, definitely take some caution as it could be a little slick. Not only when you’re driving, but also when you’re just heading out for the morning on the sidewalk or your front porch.”

NWS issued a winter weather advisory for through to 6 a.m. Monday morning for areas throughout Massachusetts, as well as northern Connecticut and Rhode Island, warning of freezing rain and ice accumulations up to two tenths of an inch.

The freezing rain will see “gradual south-to-north improvement by early Monday morning,” NWS stated in an X post, noting impacts to travel Monday morning especially in low lying areas north of the Mass Pike.

“The main thing that could do to us is we already have pretty cold pavement temperatures, because it’s been pretty cold the past couple days, so that’ll probably help create some pretty slick to slippery conditions on untreated surfaces, like sidewalks or even roadways,” Mensch warned.

Temperatures are expected to rise Monday, reaching a high of 50 degrees as rain continues through to the afternoon, NWS forecasts. Boston is also expected to see patchy fog around 11 a.m. to noon.

“After mild day on Monday, temperatures are going to pretty much lean below normal for the rest of the week,” Mensch said. “Tuesday through even the weekend, temperatures will be generally below normal. Our first cold front comes in Monday night into Tuesday.”

Monday night are forecasted to drop into the mid-20s, NWS said, as winds pick up. On Tuesday, skies are expected to be partly sunny, and temperatures will likely stay below 30 degrees.

“We’re also expecting strong gusty westerly winds as well on Tuesday; there’s even potential that we could even have a wind advisory,” said Mensch, noting their could be potential for gusts from 35 mph to 55 mph in higher terrain near areas like the Berkshires or up to 45 mph in areas like the Boston metro area.

There’s “increasing potential” for the wind advisories, Mensch said, advising residents to “keep an eye” out for updates in the start of the week.

Heading into New Year’s Eve, NWS forecasters expect cloudy skies and a high in the mid-30s, before temperatures drop to a chilly low around 20 degrees.

The night of New Year’s Eve through to New Year’s could see a period of “very light snowfall” as a front moves through, Mensch said. The snowfall has “a little lower confidence” now, Mensch said, “but it’s not really looking like it’s going to be a major impact.”

The meteorologist advised people heading out for the holiday night late Wednesday to “definitely bundle up.”

“If you’re outside in any events, it’s looks like around midnight temperatures are going to be falling into the teens for the higher elevations, and into the 20s pretty much elsewhere,” Mensch said. “So it’ll be definitely chilly at that time. In terms of wind, it may even be a little bit breezy as well. … That could even make it feel a lot colder. So it could even make things feel like single digits and teens at that point.”

New Year’s Day is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high in the high 20s, forecasts show.

Headed into the weekend, weather is preliminarily expected to stay chilly and partly to mostly sunny, NWS states.

“With Thursday, Friday, temperatures will likely struggle to get into the 30s again, so gonna feel a lot like winter and even colder,” said Mensch.
