Massachusetts woman, 21, dies in fire: ‘Heartbreaking loss’

A 21-year-old woman died in a massive house fire on Christmas Eve, according to officials.

The raging fire was at 28 Woodworth Road in Needham early Wednesday morning.

Two of the three people in the home escaped, but the third person — a 21-year-old woman — did not make it out.

“Christmas Eve began with a heartbreaking loss in Needham this morning,” Brookline Fire Fighters Local 950 IAFF posted.

“Despite an extensive rescue and suppression effort, one resident did not survive,” the Brookline firefighters added. “Our thoughts are with the family and everyone affected, especially during the holiday season.”

Brookline Fire responded as mutual aid to the multiple-alarm house fire, alongside Needham Fire and neighboring departments.

“Incidents of this scale also remind us why adequate staffing and strong mutual aid matter: getting enough trained firefighters and resources on scene quickly is critical for rescue operations, fire attack, and firefighter safety,” the Brookline firefighters wrote.

They added, “Thank you to all crews who operated for hours under difficult conditions, and to the dispatchers and support personnel who helped coordinate this large response.”
