Cohasset wins Div. 7 Super Bowl over Amesbury, 22-14
FOXBORO – With a strong rushing attack and a few timely defensive plays, Cohasset won its second Div. 7 Super Bowl title since 2021.
Senior Mike Wildfire and senior captain Gus Greene had all three rushing scores and several turnovers on downs were more than enough as No. 1 Cohasset topped No. 2 Amesbury 22-14 in the state title game at Gillette Stadium on Thursday night.
“It feels incredible,” Skippers coach Pepe Afanasiw said. “Granted, it’s happened a couple times, but this is a great group of kids. They’ve worked their tails off and they are earning their just desserts right now because they are such good people on top of good football players.”
Amesbury (12-1) had the ball with under a minute left and on a third-down play, senior captain Justin Dube pitched it to Ben Wood, who ended up getting hit and taken down for the final play from scrimmage thanks to junior Nicholas Aaskjaer.
“We talked about that in pre-game,” said Afanasiw about getting tackles in the back field. “It’s like offense wins games, but defense wins championships. We knew it was going to be a dogfight. … We knew it was going to come down to a couple critical stops and maybe a turnover here or there. We didn’t get them to turn the ball over, but we made those stops.”
Askjaer also had a tackle for loss in the first half as he was one of three Skippers to get home on the Redhawks.
“This is the best feeling I’ve ever had,” Askjaer said about winning the state title. “I’m going to remember this forever like these boys on my team. This is my family, and I wouldn’t want to win it with anyone else.”

In the third quarter, Amesbury junior Christian Iandolo recovered a fumble around midfield. The Redhawks then took the ball 50 yards on 10 plays with Dube rushing it in from a yard out on fourth down. Joe Puleo converted the two-point try to tie the contest at 14-14 with 11:53 remaining.
After the teams traded possessions, Cohasset (11-2) got the ball on its own 48 and needed just three plays as Greene (16 carries, 131 yards) scampered and held his balance for a 42-yard score. The Skippers then went for a two-point conversion after a false start packed them up. Wildfire rushed it in to make it 22-14 with 5:58 left in regulation.
“(Amesbury) kind of contained (Greene) a bit, but it’s inevitable,” said Askjaer about Greene getting loose. “He’s like clockwork. So, it was a matter of time before it happened.”
The Redhawks then got the ball back and turned the ball over on downs with under two minutes at the Skippers’ 30.
In the first half, Cohasset found paydirt on its opening drive as needed just seven plays as Wildfire ran it in from 12 yards out.

Amesbury answered right away as it ran it seven of eight plays to go 64 yards with junior Connor Scialdone scoring from 15 yards out. The two-point conversion was no good for the Redhawks as they trailed 7-6 after one.
The Skippers added to their lead after they forced Amesbury to turn the ball over on downs with under two minutes left in the first half, thanks to back-to-back sacks for junior Will Santacroce and junior Chris McSweeney. Five plays later, Wildfire kept it from five yards out to push the halftime advantage to 14-6.
“I came in thinking, like everyone today, that (winning) this is the best feeling any of us have ever had,” Wildfire said about coming away with the victory. “It truly is the (the best feeling).”
