Boston Mayor Wu’s trip to Nova Scotia cost taxpayers more than $13K, not $5K as previously disclosed, records show

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu dropped more than $13,000 in taxpayer funds on travel accommodations and a security detail for her four-day trip to Canada, where she chopped down the city’s official Christmas tree gifted by the Nova Scotia province.

Wu brought along her family, three staff members and two Boston Police officers for last month’s trip to the Canadian province at a cost of roughly $13,365, all on the taxpayers’ dime, according to updated records released by the city Tuesday.

Previously, the city had released incomplete records that indicated the mayor’s trip cost just $5,062, when factoring in flight and hotel accommodations for the mayor and two staff members, from Nov. 9-12.

The latest records show that Wu brought along an additional staff member, and two Boston Police officers who provided her security detail during the trip. The mayor’s out-of-state security detail cost taxpayers $6,220.80.

The two officers who came along were Cary Chin and Ydritzabel Oller, who had their transportation, including flight, rental cars, and related expenses of parking and gas, along with meals and hotel accommodations covered as part of the cost.

The additional City Hall staff member who accompanied the mayor was Cathy Baker-Eclipse, interim commissioner of the parks and recreation department, whose travel accommodations cost taxpayers $2,083.76.

Baker-Eclipse flew economy both ways at a total cost of $1,732.53 and spent a single night at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel at $292.13. Her travel to the Halifax airport rounded out her expenses, at $59.10.

By comparison, Wu flew economy both ways, from Boston to Halifax and back. She spent $573.79 on her flight, and $735.24 for a three-night stay for her and her family at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel — for a total cost to taxpayers of $1,309.03.

City taxpayers covered hotel accommodations for Wu’s husband and three children, but not their flights.

The mayor’s expenses were also lower than that of the two city staffers, Paul Bologna, a photographer for the mayor’s office, and Phyllis St-Hubert, director of scheduling and advance.

The Canadian trip was touted by the city as a way for the mayor to highlight a continuing partnership with the Nova Scotia province that began after an explosion that took place there in 1917 in Halifax Harbor, killing roughly 2,000 people.

Nova Scotia provides the city with its Boston Common Christmas tree each year as a thank-you for the city’s response which included sending medical aid and relief supplies following the explosion.

Wu became the first Boston mayor to attend and participate in the Boston tree-cutting ceremony in the Canadian province.
