Massachusetts man indicted for blowing up ATM in Greater Boston, looked up articles

A Massachusetts man has been indicted for allegedly blowing up an ATM in Greater Boston, with an initial forensic examination of his phone showing that he searched for articles about the explosion from local news outlets.

Christopher Silva, 43, of Stoneham, remains in custody after being arrested in late October in connection with the early September incident in Woburn. He’s slated to be arraigned in federal court next week.

A federal grand jury indicted Silva on Nov. 20 on one count of maliciously damaging by means of an explosive real property used in and affecting interstate commerce, which carries a sentence of at least five years in prison.

Silva could also face up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

The explosion at an Eastern Bank in Woburn unfolded in the early morning hours of Sept. 4, when surveillance footage captured a suspect, whom authorities later identified as Silva, approaching an exterior ATM at about 4:12 a.m.

Silva could be seen wearing a blue balaclava, yellow glasses, a black jumpsuit with orange markings, a black-and-grey backpack, and dark-colored sneakers with red markings, according to authorities and charging documents.

“In the surveillance footage,” State Trooper Michael P. Callahan wrote in an affidavit in support of a criminal complaint, “SILVA can be seen walking up to the left side of the ATM and placing a brown or tan-colored object on the bottom right corner of the ATM. The object then begins to emit smoke, and SILVA can be seen running away.”

“Several seconds later, the object explodes,” the trooper added. “The explosion caused significant damage to the frame and the lower right section of the ATM.”

Investigators recovered some of the clothing and a walking stick that Silva was seen wearing and carrying in the surveillance footage in a parking lot accessible on foot from the Eastern Bank ATM that exploded. Other items were recovered in trash bags just days after the incident, on Sept. 8.

A forensic scientist with the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab collected DNA from Silva’s blue balaclava and yellow glasses, later linking the samples to the man’s DNA profile.

Authorities also seized and searched Silva’s cellphone, with a forensic examination ongoing.

In his affidavit to support the criminal complaint, Callahan wrote that the results from an initial examination showed Silva’s Google Chrome search history included “two articles … about the Eastern Bank ATM explosion. One article was by NBC Boston and the second article was on Patch.com and had the title ‘Lone Bomber Blows Up Woburn ATM.’”
