Talk to Trump: Gov deflects on health care costs

When it comes to preventing a spike in uninsured residents, Gov. Maura Healey is passing the buck back to President Donald Trump.

“This is a big issue,” Healey said after meeting with legislative leaders Monday. “So people got to realize what Donald Trump did is take a trillion dollars out of health care.”

Healey referenced the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and its long-term federal Medicaid spending cuts.

Analysts have projected that the uninsured rate in Massachusetts could double as a result of the new rules in the federal mega law that tighten Medicaid eligibility. A report issued last week suggested Healey’s administration needs to establish a team “with a remit for aggressive implementation and a focus akin to the COVID-era command center” to prevent thousands of residents from losing coverage.

Healey offered little insight into what her administration plans to do to maintain coverage, saying it’s an issue facing many states, and instead called on Trump to extend enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, which are set to expire at the end of the year, for another two years.

If the tax credits are not extended, 350,000 Massachusetts residents could lose health care coverage by the end of next month, she said.

“It’s devastating,” Healey said, adding that the Massachusetts Health Connector is working to ensure residents have access to available insurance options.

There are continuing talks in Washington about extending the subsidies in the Affordable Care Act, but a plan has not emerged.

“So the federal government needs to act right now by extending the health care subsidies for another two years, and we’re going to continue to work on ways that we can, as a state, help our people around driving down costs and making it more affordable,” Healey said. “…Do it now, like today, like this week, because people are having to make decisions right now about whether or not they’re going to continue to be enrolled in their health insurance. So that’s what needs to happen.”
