Ford just lit a fuse for performance fans. The newly rebranded Ford Racing division says it will unveil a fresh “production road car” in January, and the tease has everyone asking the same question. Is the GT coming back for a third act?

The timing adds intrigue. The second generation Ford GT wrapped up in 2022 after a six year run, capped by special editions like the Mk IV. Since then, Ford’s flagship garage looked quiet. Now the company says the upcoming model will be a testament to how deeply it is integrating racing innovation into vehicles you drive every day. That points to a street legal machine with serious track influence.

If the GT name returns, it would be the badge’s third modern chapter. We saw the first revival in 2005, then the carbon heavy, race bred 2017 car that leaned hard on Le Mans lessons. A 2026 follow up would need to raise the bar with lighter materials, sharper aero, and a powertrain that can take a beating on track.

There is another path. Rumors suggest Ford is cooking a more extreme Mustang GTD to spar with rivals for Nürburgring bragging rights, with names like Corvette ZR1X often mentioned in the same breath. Ford leadership has also hinted at an electrified off roader with four digit horsepower, which could shift the spotlight from mid engine shapes to a lifted, brutal silhouette.

Clues to watch include the powertrain and chassis recipe. A pure ICE setup would echo GT tradition, likely with turbos and a big soundtrack. A hybrid layout would blend instant torque with endurance style efficiency, while a full EV would be the boldest swing. Expect serious rubber, big brakes, and aero that looks like it came straight from the paddock if the car is truly track centered.

Pricing and production are still a mystery, and so is the nameplate. What is certain is the date. All will be revealed on January 15, 2026.
