A bounty of summer events around N.E. lets you revel in the season
August is rolling up ahead of us, can you believe it? Summer is fleeting, be in the moment.
To help, we present you with a list of ways to truly “B” in the moment as you embrace August. All easy day trips from just about any New England starting point, and all in regions with ample lodging choices should you want to make it an overnight, this short list of b-rilliant events are just a sampling of all there is to do out there. Consider these and you’ll be on your way to true mid-summer fun.
Brews: Okemo Mountain Resort (https://www.okemo.com/) in Vermont is always a great spot to find an excellent craft brew. After all, Vermont is pretty much known as the birthplace of craft brewing.
Okemo brings it all together at their Okemo Taps & Tastes event on Aug. 2. This full day of fun centers around the resort’s Jackson Gore Courtyard, where you’ll find over 50 craft beers to sample, live music to enjoy (a DJ and two live bands keep the music pumping all day), food trucks with all kinds of tempting offerings, lawn games and some special surprises.
The resort itself is in action too, which means you can ride the Timber Ripper Mountain Coaster, play mini golf, do an adventure course and more. Tickets should be purchased on line and in advance for the event. Coaster and other resort activities are extra.
The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. which means it’s an easy do-it-all day trip. But treat yourself and book a room right at Jackson Gore and call it a getaway. Ludlow has lots of extra fun too.
Browse: Chatham, Mass. is always worth a day of meandering and poking through shops. But on Aug. 2-3, they crank it up with their annual Chatham Summer Crafts Fest.
Taking place from 10 a.m. – 5 .m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday, the event calls the town’s Community Center Lawn in the middle of the very walkable downtown – home.
And as Chatham is not your average town, this is not your average craft fair. Artisans vie for the 55 spots and those chosen represent true talent. From embroidery to copper sculptures, you’ll see (and perhaps take home) amazing pieces of art.
There’s classic and kitschy – like the seaglass hats. There’s plenty to taste and inspire your inner chef with too, like infused oils, finishing sauces, spices and more.
The event is free and takes place rain or shine. Take it all in, and then take in the rest of the town, from the classic local vibe at the Squire (https://www.thesquire.com/) to the posh but casual feel of the Chatham Bars Inn (https://www.chathambarsinn.com/).
Boats, buoys and beauty: The Gloucester Waterfront Festival (https://castleberryfairs.com/44th-annual-gloucester-waterfront-arts-and-craft-festival/) celebrates its 44th season on Aug. 16-17 and no one is tired of celebrating that.
The big, boisterous event is held at Stage Fort Park, where the backdrop of Gloucester Harbor, its many boats and all the history it holds is enough on its own.
But there’s more. Festival weekend brings more than 200 juried arts and crafts booths featuring all kinds of creative pieces like carving boards, paintings, jewelry, oils and other fine goods.
There’s plenty to eat too, like artisan cheeses, macarons and butter cookies, as well as food truck classics like fried dough, Chicago-style hot dogs and sausages.
There’s music as well. And should you wish to pre-game, they’ve got that set up. On Saturday from 7:30 a.m. -11 a.m. you can start your Festival day at the annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast, supporting a good cause and noshing on some great flapjacks. On Sunday, the North Shore Car Club will be displaying antique cars first thing.
Admission is free and – should you score a spot at Gloucester High or on Stacy Blvd, parking is free as well.
Blooms: Early summer showers bring mid-summer’s beautiful flowers. All that early rain has a benefit, and at Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury from Aug. 9-17, you can celebrate that at their Peach and Sunflower Festival.
You can pick your own bouquets of fresh flowers and your own peaches from their hearty and plentiful orchard. Then, you can take a hay ride, enjoy farm-made peach treats, listen to live music, dine and sip at their hard cider barn and more.
Event entry is free (pay for pick-your-own and food and drink), but you must register to attend at https://www.ciderhill.com/.
