Pedro Pascal gets into dad mode for ‘The Fantastic Four’

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is, says Marvel president Kevin Feige, a significant reboot of the studio’s First Family.

The Four were created and introduced by Marvel legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961, a mighty quartet of space pioneers whose DNA was permanently altered on a space mission, giving them superpowers and transforming them into beloved celebrities.

“First Steps” has Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic, married to Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm aka Invisible Woman.  “Steps” begins with Sue pregnant.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”) is Ben Grimm, unrecognizable as The Thing. Joseph Quinn is Sue’s brother Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch.

Director Matt Shakman’s ‘60s retro vision hopes to revive the franchise and see the Four interact with other Marvel characters.

That’s possible, Feige said in a virtual press conference, “Now that we’ve got the rights to them. Matt has been working very, very hard for years to bring Marvel’s First Family to life in a way that we felt would fit within the world that we’ve created. Even though this film very much stands alone. And stands apart.

“Even though,” he added, “everybody here is tired. Because they’ve already shot half of their next appearance as these characters in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ ”

“I’m a huge Fantastic Four fan,” Shankman, 49, said. “Have been since I was a kid. We knew they’re the leading lights of their era, but we had to put them on a different universe and a different Earth and build this retro-future 1960s.

“With the same energy and effort that we put in ‘WandaVision,’ we put into building this incredibly authentic, 1960s retro-future world. A combination of Jack Kirby and Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001.’”

“It always seemed revolutionary to have this mother at the center of this family — but also be absolutely part of the team,” Kirby, 37, said. “She was never left at home and that was so exciting to me. This pregnant superhero. This working mother.”

“My favorite thing,” Pascal, 50, added, “was that this person who is so brilliant, so comfortable figuring out the most complex science equations — without really knowing how to understand the much more complex equation of relationships and family and love.

“And growing in a relationship.  Growing in a family as a partner, a friend, and then of course, as a father.

“The only way he knows how to handle that is by starting to baby-proof the world, rather than just be present for the experience.

“This is definitely something Matt guided me through – the emotional arc.  ‘Cause I am not a father.  I can only imagine what it is.”
