117th Massachusetts Amateur Championship field down to eight

A 144-golfer field has been whittled to eight at the 117th Massachusetts Amateur Championship at GreatHorse in Hampden.

Two of the remaining players are members at the host course, while George Wright Golf Course is also represented by two golfers in the quarterfinal field.

The field was trimmed after two rounds of match play Wednesday, setting up Thursday’s schedule.

At 7:30 a.m., Billy Walthouse of GreatHorse will face Patrick Kilcoyne of Woodland Golf Club. At 7:40 a.m., Aidan Emmerich of Kernwood CC will battle Trevor Drew of Long Meadow GC.

The 7:50 a.m. match pits Ryan Downes of GreatHorse and Jake Ratti of Wollaston GC. The final quarterfinal match, at 8 a.m., should be a dandy, as George Wright members Joseph Lenane and Ben Spitz will vie for a spot in the semifinals.

The only players left who finished in the top five following two rounds of stroke play are Drew and Lenane.

The tournament will conclude Friday.
