Red Sox lineup: Brennan Bernardino to start finale as opener

The Red Sox will utilize an opener for the first time this season in tonight’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds.

Left-hander Brennan Bernardino will take the mound to start the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader. Brayan Bello, Wednesday night’s originally scheduled starter, pitched five innings in the early game before Aroldis Chapman closed things out.

Red Sox manager says struggling pitcher will make next start

As a result the Red Sox have a full bullpen at their disposal heading into Thursday’s off-day. Right-hander Cooper Criswell has also been added to the roster as the 27th man and will be available as a bulk reliever.

Cincinnati will start right-hander Nick Martinez (5-8, 4.12).

The Red Sox lineup is largely similar to the afternoon game. Connor Wong will start at catcher in place of Carlos Narvaez, Marcelo Mayer will start at second base, Abraham Toro will move over to third and Romy Gonzalez is back playing first.
