Battenfeld: Supreme Court slaps down activist judges, Democratic AGs
A Supreme Court ruling slapping down activist judges trying to block President Trump marks a bitter defeat for Democrats and AGs like Andrea Campbell pretending they have a role in deciding national policy.
“BIG WIN,” Trump posted minutes after the decision, which limits federal judges from blocking the president’s executive orders with nationwide injunctions.
“It’s a giant,” Trump added at a press conference taking a victory lap over the decision.
The 6-3 ruling did not address the constitutionality of Trump’s ban on birthright citizenship, but it keeps activist judges and, by extension, Attorneys General from trying to trip up Trump at every turn through lawsuits and court rulings.
Stunned Democrats called the decision a “devastating blow” and immediately took to social media and press conferences to whine and complain about the high court and Trump.
“Today’s ruling in the birthright citizenship case means just one thing – none of our rights are safe from this administration’s attacks,” Sen. Ed Markey wrote in a wildly exaggerated post., which was included in a Markey fundraising email.
Markey, who is up for reelection next year, is obviously competing to be the leading progressive in the state, but is actually part of the “gerontocracy” that younger Democrats are trying to oust.
Other Democrats, led by Campbell, just said they were “disappointed” but vowed to fight the case to protect birthright citizenship.
“We look forward to demonstrating why nationwide relief in this case is necessary, as the court has invited us to do,” said Campbell, who, along with other Democratic AGs, filed a lawsuit challenging Trump’s executive order.
Stick to Massachusetts, please, AG Campbell, and do your job – which is indicting criminals.
Campbell, whose last job was Boston City Councilor, has been a huge disappointment. She is looking to match Gov. Maura Healey in the number of lawsuits filed against the president, but the high court ruling is a serious blow to her attempts to inject herself into national politics.
Trump has openly complained for months about the Democrats’ strategy of using the courts to restrict his power.
Democrats had successfully blocked much of Trump’s agenda through more than 40 injunctions from Democratic liberal judges in lower courts.
But those days may soon be over. They’ll have to find another way. Maybe a few more “No Kings” rallies?
The high court decision Friday was written by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, one of six conservative justices on the court.
The status of birthright citizenship remains unclear, though babies born to illegal immigrants will still be considered citizens for at least 30 days.
