A local Level 2 sex offender has been arrested after allegedly recording a woman who was changing in a Target dressing room, according to officials.

Mashpee man Gregory Mattos, 37, was charged in Wareham District Court with one count of photographing an unsuspecting nude person.

He pleaded not guilty, and he was was placed on $5,000 cash bail. He was also ordered to stay away from Target store locations, and have no contact with the victim. The Plymouth DA’s office requested that Mattos be held on $50,000 cash bail.

On Monday, Wareham Police responded to a report of a suspicious person recording a woman at a Target store fitting room in Wareham Crossing.

Police officers met with the victim at the store, where she told them she noticed a black phone held over the fitting room stall that she was changing in.

She added that the phone remained in place for at least a minute, and the suspect had left the store by the time she reported the incident to Target personnel.

Store surveillance footage showed a man in a gray hoodie enter the fitting room area at 2:23 p.m. before leaving the area four minutes later — and then exiting the store without making a purchase. Video footage also showed the suspect leave the area on a bright orange and black moped.

Law enforcement then found and arrested the suspect, later identified as Mattos, while he was fishing in the area of 1033 Main St., about an hour after the incident. His phone was seized and a search warrant for its contents was requested by investigators.

Mattos is registered as a Level 2 sex offender.

He’s next scheduled to appear in court on June 30 for a pre-trial conference.
