Boston Marathon raises record $50.4M in donations to charity
The Boston Marathon raised a staggering $50.4 million in donations for charity — a double-digit jump in just one year.
The proceeds went to the Greater Boston Food Bank, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, city Boys & Girls Clubs, A Leg Forever marathon bombing victim fund, suicide prevention, Alzheimer’s, mental health, children’s groups, Gronk, Belichick, Bruins foundations. The list goes on to include 147 nonprofits.
“This has helped transform the Boston Marathon into a celebrated event,” said Jack Flemming, president and CEO of the Boston Athletic Association (BAA). “It’s all about cheering the runners and giving.”
The Boston Marathon has always been about “perseverance and determination,” the BAA added, and now you can add fellowship. The Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program comprises nearly 10% of the Boston Marathon field size.
“The fundraising total shows anything is possible when athletes from around the world, volunteers, local businesses, supporters and many more unite in the spirit of determination, selflessness and giving,” said David Tyrie, President, Marketing, Digital and Specialized Consumer Client Solutions at Bank of America.
The final tally represents more than a 10% jump in giving year-over-year.
