Watch live: Karen Read Day 27 – The defense case continues
Karen Read’s case will continue today, the 27th day of her retrial for the murder of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Watch the trial live in the video player below.
The trial has been hers since the prosecution rested last week.
Read, 45, of Mansfield, faces charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence, and leaving the scene of a collision causing death. Prosecutors say she slammed her Lexus LX570 SUV into O’Keefe and left him to freeze and die on a Canton front yard.
So far the defense, who say there was no collision and instead say others beat and killed O’Keefe and framed Read, has called four witnesses:
Matthew DiSogra, a crash reconstruction expert who said that his analysis of the prosecution experts’ data showed that O’Keefe unlocked his phone after the “backup event” that prosecutors say killed O’Keefe.
Jonathan Diamandis, a close friend of fired Trooper Michael Proctor, the case officer for the investigation that led to Read’s arrest, to authenticate the text message chain in which Proctor said nasty things about Read.
Boston Police Officer Kelly Dever, who worked for the Canton PD at the time of O’Keefe’s death. She was asked to testify to seeing two people who the defense figures into the conspiracy to frame Read spending an inordinate amount of time with Read’s car. She did not testify to that and called it a “false memory.”
Dr. Marie Russell, who testified that wounds to O’Keefe’s arms were likely dog bites and scratches, and unlikely to be a vehicle collision.
Dighton Police Officer Nicholas Barros, who testified that when he first encountered Read’s SUV before it was towed, the damage to the taillight was significantly less than when it was in police custody.
The defense has also called for the case to be dismissed, and for Judge Beverly J. Cannone to declare a mistrial. Today promises to bring even more drama.
This is a developing story.
