The Icelandic new car market edges up 5.5% year-on-year in May to 2,119 sales, leading to a year-to-date tally up 22.5% to 5,824. This is by far the biggest month of the year so far. Dacia (+53.8%) scores the biggest gain in the Top 6 and advances to second place overall with 13.4% share vs. #5 and 7.9% year-to-date. Toyota (+4.5%) completes the podium but is relatively weak. Counter-performances on the other hand by Hyundai (-23.9%), Skoda (-23.5%) and Suzuki (-4.2%). In contrast with its results in the most part of Europe, Tesla (+108.3%) surges ahead albeit with tiny volumes at 3.5% share. Mitsubishi (+740%), BYD (+457.1%) and BMW (+127.8%) all post surreal gains below. Newcomer Xpeng is down three spots on April to #16 with 1.3% share.

Over in the models charts, the Kia Sportage manages its third win of the year and snaps the YTD pole position in the process. The surprise of the month in the 2nd place of the new Dacia Bigster for its second month in market. After hitting its first Top 10 in the world last month, it now scores its first podium in the world. The Suzuki Vitara is up 11 spots on April to #3, distancing the Dacia Duster and Kia Ceed. Note only 14 sales separate the #1 from the #5 this month. The Land Rover Defender stays inside the Top 10 at #10.
