Boston Weather: First hot, humid summer days set to arrive mid-week

After a cool end to May, the greater Boston area is set to heat up for the start of June, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“It looks like we’re finally going to get some summer after kind of cold and rainy weeks,” said NWS meteorologist Kyle Pederson. “(Monday) we warm up into the low 70s. Actually should be a gorgeous day.”

Monday is expected to kick off the week on a warm, clear note, with mostly sunny skies and a low in the 50s.

The Northern Lights may also be visible Sunday night into early Monday morning, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Much of Massachusetts falls above the predicted View Line within which the aurora may be in sight on the northern horizon, the NOAA forecasts.

“Aurora can often be observed somewhere on Earth from just after sunset or just before sunrise,” the NOAA stated in the released forecast Sunday. “The aurora is not visible during daylight hours.  The aurora does not need to be directly overhead but can be observed from as much as 1,000 km away when the aurora is bright and if conditions are right.”

On Tuesday, temperatures are forecasted to rise again, reaching a high in the upper 70s, NWS states. The skies will likely be clear throughout the day, forecasts show, with a calm wind blowing through the city in the afternoon.

“Then by Wednesday and Thursday, it’s going to be hot, humid, with temps near 90 degrees,” said Pederson. “And dew points will be coming up to about 60.”

Highs Wednesday are expected to reach the high 80s, and Thursday may climb to 90 degrees, NWS forecasts. The hottest day so far this year came on May 3, when temperatures reached 84 degrees, Pederson said.

The weather is expected to remain sunny or mostly sunny Wednesday and Thursday, with partly cloudy nights, forecasts show.

“So generally, Monday, Tuesday, just nice weather, and then hot, humid, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,” said Pederson.

The high Friday is forecasted to remain up in the mid-80s, NWS shows. The weather is likely to remain partly sunny through the morning, with a chance of showers kicking in after 2 p.m.

“Our next chance for showers and maybe some thunderstorms would be Thursday and Friday right now,” said Pederson. “And actually, unfortunately, even Saturday we have showers and thunderstorm chances again.”

The weather may cool back down over the weekend, with preliminary highs forecasted to lower to the upper 70s Saturday and Sunday, NWS states.

But as the city faces the first days of true summer heat, residents should be “prepared,” the meteorologist said.

“Prepare for the heat,” said Pederson. “If you have to be outdoors, make sure you bring extra water to stay hydrated and have a place to go and cool off, either in shade or in an air conditioned building.”
