The Patriots have hired Browns offensive assistant Ashton Grant to be their new quarterbacks coach, a source confirmed to the Herald.

Grant spent five years in Cleveland, where he overlapped with new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel last season when Vrabel served in a hybrid coaching/consulting role. Grant spent the last two years as an assistant with a focus on quarterbacks. Before that, he assisted the Browns’ run and pass game coordinators in 2020 and 2021, respectively, aiding with weekly game-planning and talent evaluation.

In Cleveland, Grant also worked under ex-Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and alongside his predecessor, T.C. McCartney, who coached tight ends before moving to quarterbacks. He also learned under pass game coordinator/wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea, a former Patriots assistant who worked under new Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

In two separate offseasons, Grant coached wide receivers at all-star showcases for draft prospects. He entered the league through the Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship program and remained on separate fellowship run by the Browns. During the latter fellowship, Grant started by working 12-to-16-hour days.

Before reaching the NFL in 2020, Grant served as a quality control coach at Holy Cross from 2019-20. That followed a brief stint playing in the Alliance of American Football with the Salt Lake Stallions and NFL training camp stops with the Chiefs and Bears.

Grant played at Assumption College, where he starred as a receiver. He is a native of Manchester, Conn.
