Massachusetts Macy’s store shutting down amid nationwide closures: ‘We are closing underproductive Macy’s stores’

A local Macy’s store is one of the dozens that are closing as part of the chain’s nationwide closures announced on Thursday.

The Macy’s store in Kingston’s Independence Mall will be shutting down, the company listed on its chart of 66 total store closures across the country.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., said in a statement, “to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”

The website for the Macy’s store in Kingston lets customers know that it’s closing.

“You can visit us nearby at Macy’s Hanover Mall or use our store locator to find other locations near Kingston,” the local website reads.

The company’s “Bold New Chapter” plan is reportedly designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth. The plan includes closing about 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period, while investing in its 350 go-forward Macy’s locations through fiscal 2026.

“Since the start of A Bold New Chapter strategy, investments in the pilot Macy’s stores – First 50 – have boosted sales for three consecutive quarters and contributed to record customer satisfaction scores for the Macy’s nameplate,” the company wrote. “Building on that success, Macy’s enters 2025 well-positioned to build momentum with a stronger store fleet and remains focused on bringing this enhanced customer experience to more locations nationwide and through its digital channels.”
