NBC10 Boston cuts 5 employees from Special Projects unit

NBC10 Boston is the latest local media outlet to face layoffs.

The station with headquarters in Needham has laid off five employees, according to a source on Wednesday.

All five employees worked in the Special Projects unit for NBC10 Boston, which works on investigations. The Special Projects unit still exists, according to the source.

The laid-off employees’ positions were not revealed.

No more layoffs are expected for NBC10.

Earlier this month, investigative reporter Kathy Curran posted about her time “with the super talented special projects team at NBC10 and very proud of the work we did together!!”

Some of the highlights from the past two years included “investigations into the migrant crisis, housing, lack of prosecutions in opioid death cases, human trafficking, crime, law enforcement, corrections, school violence, DCF, endangered children, EMS industry, cannabis industry, healthcare, corruption, fraud and much more,” Curran wrote.

“Looking forward to my next role and adventure!!” she added.

Other local media outlets have recently faced layoffs. Earlier this year, GBH cut 31 workers from 13 departments — about 4% of the station’s workforce.

WBUR also laid off seven employees and 24 others took buyouts.

A longtime familiar voice on WBZ NewsRadio 1030, Kim Tunnicliffe, was recently let go from the iHeartRadio station.

Audacy also had cuts. That included WEEI Patriots reporter Mike Kadlick being laid off by the company right before the NFL Draft. WEEI later announced a major lineup shakeup.

Meanwhile, Beasley Media Group has had local layoffs. About 7% of the company workforce was cut earlier this year. That was before the Country 102.5 morning show with Ayla Brown and Jonathan Wier was replaced with a Philly show, and Rock 92.9 was replaced by Bloomberg Radio.
