Red Sox place Rob Refsnyder on IL, call up promising infielder from Triple-A

The Red Sox have placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain, the club announced shortly before first pitch Friday.

To fill his spot on the active roster, the club is calling up infielder Vaughn Grissom.

With less than 10 days remaining in the regular season, Refsnyder will miss the remainder of the year unless the Red Sox are able to pull off an improbable late-season comeback to make the playoffs. The 33-year-old has been one of Boston’s top options off the bench, batting .283 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI in 93 games.

In addition to his nominal role as a lefty killer, Refsnyder has also emerged as a veteran leader in the Red Sox clubhouse.

For Grissom, the move offers an opportunity to finish what has been an incredibly frustrating year on a high note. Acquired from Atlanta this past winter in exchange for veteran left-hander Chris Sale, Grissom was expected to compete for Boston’s starting second base job but wound up missing all of spring training due to a series of injuries.

Grissom returned in May but was clearly not himself, batting .148 with three RBI and one extra-base hit in 23 games. He subsequently went down with another hamstring strain and was optioned to Triple-A upon his activation later in the summer. Adding insult to injury, Sale has since returned to form and is now the favorite to win the National League Cy Young Award with the Braves.

The 23-year-old has turned the corner since the start of September, batting .340 with three home runs, 12 RBI, a 1.061 OPS and twice as many walks (16) as strikeouts (8) over his last 15 games. Now as the Triple-A season winds down he’ll have a chance to demonstrate his progress at Fenway Park over the final week and set himself up for a big 2025.
