ICE Boston arrests Brazilian national charged with sex crimes against Massachusetts resident

ICE Boston agents have arrested another noncitizen who’s charged with sex crimes against a Nantucket resident.

ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston recently arrested a Brazilian national who has been charged with sexually assaulting a Nantucket resident.

Officers with ERO Boston arrested Gean Do Amaral Belafronte on Nantucket last week. This comes as local ICE agents also nabbed a 28-year-old Salvadoran national who’s charged with raping a Nantucket child.

“Gean Do Amaral Belafronte unlawfully entered the United States, made his way to Nantucket, and allegedly sexually assaulted one of our residents,” ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons said in a statement.

“We have been consistent in our promise to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing egregious noncitizen offenders,” Lyons added. “This is not a hollow expression; it is a sincere promise to the residents of our New England communities.”

Belafronte lawfully entered the U.S. in October 2018. However, he violated the terms of his lawful admission, according to ICE, and he left the U.S. in April 2021.

Then Belafronte unlawfully reentered the U.S. on an unknown date, at an unknown location, without being inspected, admitted or paroled by a U.S. immigration official, according to ICE.

Nantucket Police arrested Belafronte on June 9, and charged him with indecent assault and battery on a person 14 years or older.

Nantucket District Court released Belafronte on bail. Then officers with ERO Boston arrested Belafronte on Sept. 11 on Nantucket, and served him with a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge. Belafronte remains in ERO custody.

ERO conducts removals of individuals without a lawful basis to remain in the U.S., including at the order of immigration judges with Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review.

The Executive Office for Immigration Review is a separate entity from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Immigration judges in these courts make decisions based on the merits of each individual case, determining if a noncitizen is subject to a final order of removal or eligible for certain forms of relief from removal.
