Red Sox place Brennan Bernardino on IL, activate fellow left-hander
The Red Sox have placed left-hander Brennan Bernardino on the 15-day injured list with left elbow soreness, manager Alex Cora announced Wednesday afternoon.
Fellow left-hander Cam Booser (left elbow inflammation) will be activated to fill his spot in the Red Sox bullpen.
Cora told reporters that Bernardino has been feeling something in his elbow area, and that the issue is bone-related, not ligament-related. He underwent an MRI earlier in the day and the club decided to shut him down for the time being.
“There’s some stuff there, nothing that is alarming but it doesn’t make sense to push,” Cora said.
Bernardino has been Boston’s most reliable left-handed reliever over the past two seasons, and this year the 32-year-old has posted a 4.06 ERA over 57 appearances. Bernardino has been less productive recently, however, and after recording a 1.69 ERA over his first 33 games prior to the All-Star break, he’s posted an 8.05 ERA over his last 24 outings.
Cora provided several other injury updates regarding the bullpen on Wednesday as well.
Liam Hendriks, who suffered a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery last week, has still not made any progress on the mound.
“We’re still kind of in a holding pattern right here, as you know we’re running out of time, so at one point we have to make a decision with what we’re going to do,” Cora said, adding that the time to make a decision is close.
In addition, right-hander Lucas Sims (right lat strain) threw a bullpen on Monday and right-hander Luis Garcia (right shoulder inflammation) threw one on Tuesday. Right-hander Bryan Mata, who has spent the entire season on the IL with a series of ailments, could also begin a rehab assignment over the weekend.
