OBF: No Bill, no Brady, but Pats were fun Sunday

NEW YORK – It’s 9/11.

Patriot Day.

Never Forget.

This day is not to be confused with Patriots Day, which is celebrated in Maine and Massachusetts each April.

Or Patriots’ Day, which took place this past Sunday.

Patriots’ rookie head coach Jerod Mayo is a mere 332 victories – including the postseason and those six Super Bowls – behind the sainted Hoodie on the all-time NFL head coaching win list.

If Mayo takes no days off and runs the table – meaning consecutive 19-0 seasons – he’ll reach Bill Belichick’s current number on the All-Time Wins List in Week 5 of the 2041 season.

Rest easy, BB.

Or whenever you can find the time in between those 49 weekly media appearances, posting on “Instaface,” and trying to keep pace with your latest flame. Now 23, she was all of minus-10-years-old when you earned that first head coaching victory with the Cleveland Browns in 1991.

Belichick hopes 72 is the new 30 on the sidelines, too. He aims to return to the head coaching ranks next season. ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus notes that Belichick’s plan for his near-term future has long been public knowledge in Bristol.

“Belichick had no desire to do a traditional studio show or call games,” Magnus said during the Front Office Sports Tuned In seminar Tuesday. “He also has been very open about hoping to coach again. Wanting to coach again.”

Maybe Mayo should stick around until 2042.

After Week 1, the carpets in Dallas and Philly remain tightly wound. Meanwhile, the Giants appear ready to cash out on Brian Daboll and Daniel Jones. Wonder what John Mara would give for first dibs on Belichick, Shedeur Sanders, and all that Back Page publicity in 2025?

Everything old is new again in Foxboro. At least for one week. The Patriots prevailed with a punishing defense, a ball-control offense, and a QB who only had to throw when absolutely necessary. In a way, the 16-10 victory over the Bungles was their best quality win overall since Brady’s departure. If not the most impressive. At least since they ran the ball 46 times in 49 snaps at Buffalo back on Dec. 6, 2021, in a late autumnal hellscape of Orchard Park, New York.

Those who were wise (myself not included here) invested in the Patriots +8, or in the profitable moneyline of +280. There were plenty of signs that the Cincy Cats might be headed to the Rainbow Bridge. The Patriots took advantage and delivered as flawless a performance as possible, given their circumstances.

This season, the Patriots are unburdened of what has been.

Belichick is gone. As are expectations of success. And digestible football.

Or so we were told before Sunday afternoon.

More than that – even for those who got the better of DraftKings with New England and the under – watching the Patriots became fun again.

At least for one day.

Sunday’s game was enjoyable from start to finish for anyone wishing success in Foxboro this season.

That’s probably one reason why Belichick never mentioned it during his 40-minute, slap-and-tickle paid appearance with Pat McAfee on Monday. Or during his time with Peyton and Eli Manning Monday night. He made a “peace treaty” with Eli. Belichick and Peyton Manning will be doing a weekly “Breakdown” show ahead of each MNF game on ESPN+ this season, Magnus added Tuesday.

No doubt Belichick will find a way to work praise for the Patriots into the conversation, whenever it helps his season-long “hire me” infomercial.

Belichick and/or his media toadies will no doubt remind us that the core of this Patriots team remains players he either drafted, or signed, or acquired.

Tell that to Dan Duquette. See how much love he gets when the Red Sox, Fenway Sports Group, and Netflix drop their documentary on the 2004 Red Sox season in a couple of weeks.

We’re not going to ruin your week by asking “The Big Question.”

That being: “If the team is this good, why can’t Drake Maye play now?”

We’re being told Jacoby Brissett was the secret sauce because he didn’t turn over the ball, and he was “quick on his feet.”

Just a few weeks ago, we were being told Maye needs to stay in the pocket.

Nope, this week, it’s all unicorns and show ponies on Route 1.

One Patriot Place is the new Disney World. It is the happiest “place” on Earth.

In addition to whatever the Patriots make of this season, still holding on to my “Under 4.5 Wins” ticket, we have the undeclared Cold War between Belichick and his former in-house GOAT.

Brady earned a Gentleman’s “C” in his Fox debut Sunday. Not sure the network wants to pay $37.5 million annually for just a “C.” Brady will improve as he gets more comfortable and keeps pace with play. His best moments Sunday came when he was looking ahead to the next play, and breaking down alignments on defense as the Cowboys had their hands all over Deshaun Watson.

(There’s a twist.)

But Brady was quick to heap big praise on Dallas Coach Mike McCarthy. And often. Dallas is certainly among the preferred stops for Belichick next season, especially with Dak Prescott in the fold. BB does not want the Cowboys to do well. Certainly not their coach.

Score one for Team Brady. And he has the Cowboys at home against the Saints this week. By 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Brady may christen McCarthy as the GOAT.

Even more delicious is the very real possibility next season Brady doing color on a game coached by Belichick.

Talk about Karma.

Meanwhile, we have the perfect Patriots.

A team poised to go 2-0 this week.

Mark your calendars, the Super Bowl is in 151 days.

Just like old times.
