High school girls volleyball preview: Newton North eyes 3-peat
Newton North has proven its worthiness at the top of Div. 1 by winning two consecutive titles, but several other teams will also be vying for glory in the 2024 high school girls volleyball season.
The Tigers return two All-Scholastics in outside hitter Devon Burke (336 kills, 32 aces) and setter Sasha Selivan (93 aces, 123 kills, 426 assists). Alexa Marucci is back at libero.
Runner-up Barnstable will feature outside hitters Molly Gleason and Alyssa McDowell. Dylan Andrews steps in as a middle hitter, and Teagan Geraghty is the setter.
Julia Leonardo, Addie Shelton and Ellie Shelton are taking leading roles for Attleboro. Sophia and Haley Carter are the setters, with Nancy Ayesiyenga and Victoria Zaldivia covering spots at the net. Sage Young and Sienna Quaglia will deepen the defense.
Needham brings back setter/libero Lizzy Tam, right-side hitter Sadie Stants and outside hitter Alex Sykora.
Jessie Wang and Megan Durant will hit from the outside for Andover, with Naomi Vajda covering the middle. Kate Hillson takes up the libero position.
Franklin has a returning Hockomock League All-Star in outside hitter Makayla Kuykendall (197 kills, 74 aces). Olivia Alberti returns as well for the Panthers at middle hitter.
Bishop Feehan has a youthful squad this season. The Shamrocks are bringing back middle hitter Charlotte Skulte, setter Addison Fry, libero Grace Forbes, middle hitter Ava Stewart and outside hitter Caroline Dunn.
Georgia Tyrell, Samantha Norman, Montana Weaver, Teeghan Patch, Mia Grandin, Morgan Oberlee, Anna Goretti, Hailey Lenkauskas, Kathleen O’Reilly and Grace Hadley are coming back for Div. 2 state champion Westborough.
“As always we strive to play our best volleyball when it matters most,” said Westborough head coach Roger Anderson. “This year’s group will work hard, have fun, and focus on the process. Hopefully that leads us to some positive results.”
State finalist Canton retains Hockomock League All-Stars Erin Bigham (setter) and Soley Rodriguez Martinez (libero). Sally Hoban plays as an outside hitter.
Melrose will be captained by senior setter Leah Fowke and junior middle hitter Sabine Wenzel.
Patriot League All-Stars Skye Cerow, Caleigh Ryan and Caroline Cusson will retake the court for Duxbury.
Hopkinton will showcase two Tri-Valley League All-Stars in outside hitter Adriana Aquino and setter Gabby Pattie. Elsa Woodbury (outside hitter) and Liv Carrazza (libero/defensive specialist) are also back.
In Div. 3, Fielding Mayhugh and Nevaeh Yance are the outside hitters for Weston, with Eleanor Wilkins at middle hitter and Riley Huml at setter.
Lily Brodeur and Kendall Larkin are the outside hitters for Medfield, with Ally Bonoldi blocking from the middle and Kaitlyn Marshall hitting from the right. Ava Pender and Kayla Hanna will do the setting, with Maya Jackson playing as a defensive specialist and libero.
Mia Kenny will hit from the outside for Wakefield. Lila Arkinstall will fill the middle, with Sophia Anderson (defensive specialist/libero) and Brooklyn Calder (right side hitter/defensive specialist/libero) handling defensive duties.
Wayland retains setter Samantha Lee, libero Tristen Chow and outside hitter Anna Yalli.
Vivian Castano (setter) and Mariah Eaton (middle hitter) are the captains for Dennis-Yarmouth. Castano is approaching the school record in assists, and Eaton led the Dolphins in kills and blocks last year.
Ipswich has a multitude of returning players from its Div. 4 state champion squad. Claire Buletza, Frannie Hertz and Addison Pillis are the senior captains. Pillis, an All-Scholastic middle hitter, led the Cape Ann League in blocks last year with 60.
Bellingham is bringing back Tri-Valley League Small MVP Sophia Soto. Outside hitters Mia Milani and Val Nolan are back as well, along with setter Jacobi Houtson, opposite hitter Taylor Callery and middle hitter Aubrey Callery.
Case brings back one of its top hitters, Madilyn Botelho. Nicole Rebelo (libero), Deanna Brightman (middle hitter), and Alanna Martinez (outside hitter) are the other returning starters, while freshman Madyson Silva will compete for the starting setter position.
Ursuline returns 10 players, including Catholic Conference All-Star outside hitter Carly Tarantola.
Div. 5 state finalist Bourne will be captained by outside hitter Carely May, middle hitter Reese Williams and defensive specialist Hannah Petrillo.
Senior captains Meredith Gatz (middle/right side hitter), Macy Cyr (setter), Isabella Briones (middle hitter/utility player), and Madison Adams (libero) will lead Millis. Addison Loer is the outside hitter.
