Saints pull away late to beat Iowa Cubs and take series

A close game Sunday at CHS Field turned decisively in the St. Paul Saints’ way against the Iowa Cubs.

St. Paul scored seven runs over its final three at-bats to beat Iowa 9-3 and take the six-games series 4-2.

Saints outfielder Carson McCusker led the way for the offense with three hits and three RBIs, falling a triple shy of the cycle. He added his third homer since being called up to Triple-A on Aug. 24. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound McCusker, 26, is hitting .327 with a 1.001 OPS in 13 games for St. Paul.

Travis Adams started for the Saints and pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. Caleb Baragar (2-3) allowed a run in one inning but earned the win in relief of Adams.

After trailing 2-0 in the top of the third inning, Payton Eeles had an RBI single in the bottom of the frame and Chris Williams added an RBI single in the fourth. Jeferson had an RBI double in the sixth to put St. Paul in front but the Cubs tied the score before the Saints’ big finish.

McCusker hit a three-run homer in the seventh and Diego A. Castillo had a three-run single in the eighth.

The Saints head out for a six-game series in Columbus starting on Monday.
