Patriots-Bengals inactives notes: Rookie Javon Baker won’t dress Week 1
CINCINNATI — Patriots rookie wide receiver Javon Baker will need to wait to make his NFL debut.
Baker, a 2024 fourth-round pick, is among the Patriots’ Week 1 inactives Sunday in the season opener against the Bengals.
Here’s the full list of Patriots inactives:
QB Joe Milton (emergency third QB)
WR Javon Baker
G Sidy Sow (ankle)
OT Demontrey Jacobs
G Zach Thomas
LB Curtis Jacobs
DT Eric Johnson
Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase will play Sunday despite being listed as questionable with an illness. Fellow wide receiver Tee Higgins (hamstring) is inactive.
Baker was an early standout in training camp but tailed off in late August as drops and miscommunication became an issue. The UCF product made headlines for the wrong reasons last week when he went live on Instagram to complain about being pulled over by police near Logan Airport in Boston. Head coach Jerod Mayo said Baker had been punished but that it would not affect his game status. Baker, who told Pro Football Network’s Dakota Randall this week that he did not regret his comments, was already buried on the wide receiver depth chart behind DeMario Douglas, Tyquan Thornton, K.J. Osborn and fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk. The Patriots made Kayshon Boutte active over Baker.
More notes:
— The Patriots’ active offensive linemen will be Chukwuma Okorafor, David Andrews, Mike Onwenu, Michael Jordan, Nick Leverett, Vederian Lowe (abdomen) and rookies Layden Robinson and Caedan Wallace with Demontrey Jacobs and Thomas, both of whom were claimed off waivers in late August, and Sidy Sow (ankle) inactive.
— Curtis Jacobs and Johnson were also claimed off waivers and won’t dress.
— Safety Jabrill Peppers (hip) and running back Antonio Gibson (hamstring) are both active after being listed as questionable.
— Milton, a 2024 sixth-round pick, can only play if starter Jacoby Brissett and backup Drake Maye both get injured.
— Wide receiver Kendric Pryor, defensive end Cedric Johnson, offensive tackle Amarius Mims, tight end Tanner McLaughlin and defensive tackle Kris Jenkins Jr. are also inactive for the Bengals.
— Baker, Milton and Curtis Jacobs are the only rookies who will be inactive. Maye, Polk, Wallace, Robinson, cornerback Marcellas Dial, tight end Jaheim Bell and undrafted rookie safety Dell Pettus can all potentially make their NFL debuts.
