Penn State’s opener at West Virginia is suspended because of weather
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Penn State’s season opener Saturday at West Virginia was suspended at halftime with the Nittany Lions leading the Mountaineers 20-6 because of thunderstorms.
The Mountaineer Field scoreboard flashed a message about the potential for a delay late in the second quarter.
Moments after the first half ended, it was announced at 2:04 p.m. that the game was being suspended and that the stadium was being evacuated.
Heavy rain fell for almost two hours and lightning filled the air. As of 4 p.m., the game had not been resumed.
It was the second time in Penn State football history that a Lions game was suspended because of weather.
On Nov. 3, 2017, officials suspended Penn State’s game at Michigan State because of rain and lightning near Spartan Stadium with the Lions leading 14-7 and 7:58 left in the second quarter.
The delay that afternoon began at 1:15 p.m. and lasted 3 hours, 22 minutes until the game resumed at 4:37 p.m. in front of a much smaller crowd than the 71,605 who were present at the start.
Matt Coghlan kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to lift Michigan State over Penn State 27-24.
