Familiar formula boosts Lynx to seventh straight victory

Make it seven in a row for the Minnesota Lynx.

Kayla McBride scored 19 points and the Lynx continue to dominate Phoenix, winning 89-76 in Arizona late Wednesday and moving into second place in the WNBA standings with nine games remaining.

Minnesota has won 26 of 31 regular season contests against the Mercury since August 2015. It’s also won six straight postseason meetings.

This time it was the traditional mix of offensive success and slowing down its opponent.

The Lynx shot 45.8% from the field while its tops-in-the-league defense held undisciplined Phoenix to 38.2% shooting and forced 20 Mercury turnovers. Minnesota had 25 points off those miscues.

The Lynx (23-8) have averaged 90.3 points per game in winning all six of their games since the All-Star break by double digits.

Napheesa Collier, who was named Western Conference Player of the Week Tuesday and was averaging 25.6 points per game since the Olympic break, finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. But as a focal point of the Mercury defense, Collier’s presence left wide-open shots for her teammates.

Courtney Williams finished with 16 points and Myisha Hines-Allen had 11.

As they’ve done many times during the winning streak, the Lynx pulled away in the third quarter. In three of its past five games, Minnesota had a double-digit points advantage in the frame.

A 10-0 surge, including a pair of 3-pointers by McBride, helped Minnesota quickly push a single-digit halftime lead to 61-41. The Lynx, whose 39.1% success from deep leads the league, finished 11 of 26 for 42.3%.

Bridget Carleton had six points, McBride five and Williams four in a 17-0 Lynx run for a 20-5 lead midway through the first quarter. Of Minnesota’s first 16 points, 13 came off eight Phoenix turnovers. The Lynx led 25-15 at quarter’s end.

The Mercury, who shot 36.4% in he first half, got within six in the second, but the Lynx pushed the lead to nine by halftime.

For the Lynx, now 9-5 on the road, it’s good to find success in a tough environment because they are going to spend much of the season’s remaining three weeks — six of nine games — away from Target Center, including Friday in Dallas.

Diana Taurasi and Sophie Cunningham led Phoenix (16-16) with 16 points.
