China imports July 2024: Toyota (+61.2%) stands out in negative market

The Alphard helps push Toyota up 61.2% in July

55,881 new cars were imported in China in July, a -2.6% year-on-year decline. The year-to-date tally is now off -8.9% to 372,753. Lexus (+14%) goes against the negative market to continue dominating the brands charts, with its YTD volume almost reaching 100,000 units in just 7 months (+23.8%). Mercedes (-3.6%) stays in second place ahead of BMW (+1.6%) and Porsche (-16%) in difficulty. In fact, the Top 7 brands are unchanged on June, with Land Rover (-8.1%), Audi (-26.7%) both sinking faster than the market and a surging Toyota (+61.2%) in tow. Mini (+4.1%) also nudges ahead at #8. Below, notice Jagar (+359.1%), Ferrari (+177.4%) and DS (+285.7%) all in excellent shape.

Model-wise, the Lexus ES (+19%) and Mercedes GLE (+38.2%) both stun. They are followed by the Lexus RX (-8.7%) while the Range Rover (+60.9%) posts a second consecutive month at #4 and ranks #5 year-to-date vs. #15 over the Full Year 2023. The Land Rover Defender (-15%) remains in 5th position above the Porsche Cayenne (+37%) and Panamera (-12%). The Toyota Alphard (+147.5%) posts the biggest gain in the Top 20 at #9 and the recently relaunched BMW X2 climbs to #14 vs. #29 year-to-date.
