Patriots extra points: Christian Gonzalez is taking

FOXBORO — Christian Gonzalez has his work cut out for him this season.

The Patriots cornerback got a head start on preparing for the wide receivers he’ll face this season. He said Saturday he started studying his competition “a while ago.”

The Patriots are set to face off against a difficult slate of wide receivers, including Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, DK Metcalf, Garrett Wilson, Deebo Samuel, (maybe) Brandon Aiyuk, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Calvin Ridley, DeAndre Hopkins, D.J. Moore, Puka Nacua, Cooper Kupp, Michael Pittman and Marvin Harrison Jr. in 2024.

“How each receiver moves, how they go about coming in and out of the huddle, kind of more of the little things towards the actual receiver, not so much the scheme,” Gonzalez said of what he was looking for while studying up. “We get more into that when we get into the week of the game. More studying the mannerisms and small little things.

“You gotta find a way, playing corner, you’ve got to find a little extra step.”

Gonzalez got out to an excellent start to his rookie season before tearing his labrum in Week 4. He’s been a full-go in training camp.

Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf will speak to reporters for the first time since the draft on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. … The Patriots will practice Sunday and Monday in sessions open to the media but not fans before a break on Tuesday. They’re scheduled to hold practices Wednesday, Thursday and Friday open to the media but not fans as they prepare for their third and final preseason game against the Commanders … Mayo said Saturday, Sunday and Monday’s practices were the final sessions of training camp, indicating the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are more about game prep … Mayo will speak Monday, Wednesday and Friday before practice this week.
