Amazon to build second warehouse in Woodbury

Two years after opening a 520,000-square-foot sortation center in Woodbury, Amazon is planning to build a second warehouse facility in the east-metro suburb.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday night signed off on the e-commerce giant’s plans to build a 225,000-square-foot distribution center at the northeast corner of Hudson Road and Settlers Ridge Parkway.

The center, which will open in the fall of 2025, is expected to employ 180 people. The developer is Ryan Cos.

The center, commonly referred to as a “last-mile facility,” will likely enhance product delivery times for city residents, City Planner Eric Searles said. It will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, he said.

Deliveries from the warehouse will be made by 450 vans between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. According to information provided by the applicant, 70 vans will leave the center every 20 minutes, and about 20 semitrailers will make deliveries to the center from midnight to 7 a.m., he said.

In August 2022, Amazon opened its MSP8 sortation center at 11975 Hudson Road to support the “middle mile,” which is a stop on a package’s journey between the warehouse and customers’ doorsteps.

When MSP8 opened, Hudson Road was improved to handle additional traffic, Searles said. For the second facility, Amazon officials have agreed to pay for a traffic signal at Hudson Road and Lake View Drive, he said.

The Woodbury City Council voted 4-1 to approve the project. Council member Kim Wilson, the lone dissenter, expressed concerns about the number of warehouses in the northeast part of the city and the potential noise impacts on future residents of the affordable housing project located to the south of Hudson Road, Searles said.
