Jacoby Brissett continues to take all first-team reps in Patriots training camp

FOXBORO — It hasn’t always looked like there’s a quarterback competition in Patriots training camp.

Veteran Jacoby Brissett leads off every drill at quarterback. During team drills, he’s the only quarterback repping with the first-team offensive line in 11-on-11s. He started Thursday’s preseason opener.

Rookie Drake Maye, meanwhile, always follows Brissett in team drills, and he’s only worked with backup offensive linemen in practices open to the media. Thursday’s preseason game was the first time we saw him working with the offensive line.

“I never think about it,” Brissett said Monday about his standing on the depth chart. “I just go in there and try to do my best when I’m out there.”

It helps, of course, that Brissett has eight years of NFL experience and 48 starts under his belt. His experience with Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt during their year together with the Browns in 2022 also plays to his advantage, as well. He’s also simply played better than his rookie competition.

“I think that definitely is an advantage not only to me but to the team as far as I know what AVP and this offense is looking for as far as certain things,” Brissett said. “Being able to re-emphasize that to the guys when we’re in the locker room or on the practice, field, the huddle and things like that, I think that fast-tracks us more than when I was in this offense the first time. …

“I think it comes with the job, honestly. It’s what you signed up for. I want to make sure everyone in the huddle, when I’m in the huddle, knows what I’m doing and what I’m thinking. It’s just all about — it’s the position, playing the position.”
