Chinatown streets were filled with the vibrant sights and sounds of the August Moon Festival once again Sunday afternoon.

The annual August Moon Festival held in Boston’s Chinatown brought out a mass of enthusiastic residents, local vendors, Asian folk and lion dancers, Chinese opera performers and many more to celebrate the holiday.

The festival was put on by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) of New England throughout the neighborhood from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The celebrations are one of the “greatest Chinese festivals, the CCBA wrote of the festival, “second only to the Chinese New Year.”

“Since the arrival of autumn is thought to be a propitious season and the weather is usually conducive to good health and enjoyment, the August Moon Festival is a festival of joy and health,” the CCBA said. “The August Moon Festival is also known as the Harvest Festival, a time of thanks for the harvest and good crops.”

The celebrations come as Boston’s festival season is still in high gear. Upcoming free festivals include the North End Fisherman’s Feast from Aug. 15 to Aug. 18, the African Festival of Boston on the Boston Common from Aug. 17 to Aug. 18 and St. Anthony’s Feast in the North End from Aug. 24 to Aug. 27.
