Encore Boston Harbor arrest: Man accused of stealing $1,000 chips from table game, creating distraction

A 35-year-old man apparently put on quite the show on the Encore casino floor Tuesday evening, as he allegedly created a distraction and stole more than a dozen $1,000 chips from a table game.

Gary Hunt is accused of running off with 13 of the orange $1,000 chips swiped from a dealer’s tray at Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Witnesses had reportedly seen Hunt sitting at the table while not playing the game, as he got up several times to use his phone.

“The last time he returned to the table, the suspect informed those around him that another nearby patron won a large sum of money,” State Police said in a statement. “After distracting the other patrons and staff, the suspect reached over the table, secured thirteen (13) orange $1,000 chips from the dealer’s tray, immediately ran off the casino floor, and used an emergency exit to leave the property.”

A State Police Gaming Enforcement Unit sergeant and an Everett Police detective relayed the suspect’s description to the State Police Troop A Communication Section — which broadcast the information to area law enforcement.

State Police and Everett Police conducted a search and found a man matching the description in a parking lot near the casino. Police detained Hunt who reportedly had several orange $1,000 chips.

Officials also found three additional orange $1,000 chips using security video. Hunt was allegedly seen dropping one chip while leaving the property and discarding two from his sneaker once outside.

State Police then transported Hunt to the Medford Barracks for booking. He was charged with two offenses: larceny over $1,200; and larceny from a building.
