More rain, cooler weather ahead

Boston is in for another stretch of rainy days, but a break from the heat in the coming week, according to National Weather Service forecasting.

“It’s going to be a really unsettled week for the Boston area,” said NWS meteorologist Kristie Smith. … “We are expecting a chance for thunderstorms again (Monday), parts of Tuesday, Wednesday, late Thursday and then into next weekend looks pretty unsettled, so I would say pretty much rain chances every day.”

Chances of rain and thunderstorms remain through the week, NWS forecasts show, as high temperatures drop cooler later in the week.

Monday is expected to see patchy fog in the Boston area throughout the early morning, forecasts predict, and a high of 92 degrees with increasing clouds throughout the day.

Monday is expected to be “the last hot, hot day that we have for a while now,” Smith said. Throughout the day, temperatures will be in the 80s, she added, with pretty high dew points in the mid-70s.

On Tuesday and moving into the rest of the week, the region is expected to see a cold front move in south of the Boston area, Smith said. The front is forecasted to linger, drop temperatures “pretty significantly” and drive rain showers throughout the week.

Highs from Tuesday to Sunday are expected to remain around the upper 70s, forecasts show. The sun is expected to show Tuesday and Wednesday between possible showers, before a series of mostly cloudy days are expected through Friday.

Forecasts will also be tracking a tropical storm making landfall in the U.S. from the south.

“For late week and into next weekend, we are tracking the possible impacts from Tropical Storm Debby, which is making landfall in Florida (Monday) morning, and then it’s going to kind of linger down off of Savannah and Charleston and eventually make its way north,” Smith said. “Right now, there’s a lot of uncertainty, though, in the timing and exactly how much rain we’ll see from that system.”

Forecasters are staying tuned for how the storm may impact the Northeast from Friday through Sunday, Smith said, and may not have further details on the storm until late in the week. The region may see “substantial rainfall,” Smith said, but could also see none.
