St. Paul’s Emmanuel Matadi’s 100-meter Olympic run ends in semis
Emmanuel Matadi raced through the first round of the men’s 100 meters for the first time in three Olympic tries thanks to his time on Saturday.
There was no such luck on Sunday.
The 2009 St. Paul Johnson grad completed his semifinal run with a time of 10.18 seconds — a tenth of a second slower than his first-round time — Saturday to finish eighth out of nine runners in his heat. He finished more than two-tenths out of qualifying position for the final.
Matadi entered the Olympics ranked 15th in the world in the 100 meters, with a season-best time of 9.91 seconds recorded last month.
The 33-year-old said prior to the Games that these Olympics would be his last, meaning he has one event remaining in his Olympic career, as he’ll compete for Liberia in the 4×100 meter relay. That kicks off on Aug. 8.
Matadi was Liberia’s opening ceremony flag bearer for the second time in three Olympic appearances at the start of these Games.
