Massachusetts Pirates advance to play for the IFL championship
In their first season calling Lowell home, the Massachusetts Pirates are going to play for a championship.
The Pirates punched their ticket to the Indoor Football League title game with an impressive 51-28 upset victory over the Green Bay Blizzard in Wisconsin on Friday night.
Massachusetts (10-8) was the clear underdog against Green Bay (14-4), but the visitors pulled off their second straight road upset to capture the Eastern Conference crown.
Quarterback Alejandro Bennifield and running back Jimmie Robinson were too much for the Blizzard.
Bennifield had a hand in four touchdowns. He was 10-for-15 for 118 yards and three touchdowns. He tossed TD’s to receivers Isaac Zico (38-yard strike), Teo Redding and Thomas Owens.
On the ground, Bennifield rushed twice for 11 yards and one score.
Robinson continued his outstanding season in the backfield. He galloped for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. The Pirates cruised to a 34-14 halftime lead.
Defensively, Matt Elam made the play of the game for the Pirates, intercepting a Max Meylor pass and returning it 17 yards for a TD to give the visitors a 32-7 lead in the second quarter. Elam is a former first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens.
