The MG ZS ranks #2 in Spain in July. 

New car sales in Spain edge up 3.4% year-on-year in July to 83,979 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 5.6% to 619,224. We however remain -23.4% below the pre-pandemic figure of January-July 2019. This time and encouragingly, private sales pull the market up at +16.8% to 40,993 units and 48.8% share vs. 43.2% in July 2023. Company sales fall -10.1% to 31,599 and rental sales gain 3.9% to 11,387. Year-to-date, this time rental sales remain the driving force at +34.6% to 149,876 and 24.2% share vs. 19% over the first 7 months of 2023 while private sales are up 7.7% to 257,487 and company sales drop -10.3% to 211,861. Cantabria in the most dynamic region at +40.4% followed by Asturias at +27.2%, Cataluña at +19.8%, Galicia at +19.5% and Pais Vasco at +19%. Behemoth Madrid actually falls -1.5% to 34,845 sales.

Toyota (+13.5%) retains the brands top spot with a solid gain to 9.9% share vs. 9.2% so far this year. Hyundai (+33.2%) does even better and climbs three ranks on June to #2 overall with 7.7% share vs. 6.3% YTD. The next four manufacturers underperform with declines, Kia (-15.7%) being hit the hardest above Renault (-4%), Volkswagen (-2.9%) and Seat (-2.6%). The latter remains #2 year-to-date vs. #5 over the Full Year 2023. MG (+52%) is the biggest gainer in the Top 20 and breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #9 with 3,944 sales and 4.7% share, all records. Its previous best were #12 in June, August, September and October 2023, 3,663 sales in June 2023 and 4.4% share in September 2023. Notice also Chinese newcomer Omoda up to #21 overall with 1.2% share.

Model-wise, the Dacia Sandero (+16.7%) posts its 5th win this year with 3.2% share, while the MG ZS (+60%) rallies back up 15 spots on last month to #2 and 3.2% as well, breaking its monthly volume record. The Toyota Corolla (+21.9%) is also very solid in third place above the Hyundai Tucson (+34.4%) and Toyota C-HR (+28.2%) very dynamic. In fact 8 of the Top 10 models beat the market, with the Kia Niro (+226.5%) ranking inside the Top 10 for the first time at #9, its previous best being #14 hit in October 2021 and July 2022. The Toyota Yaris Cross (+43.7%) and Seat Ibiza (+32.4%) also stand out.
