Red Sox OF Tyler O’Neill named American League Player of the Week
Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill has been named American League Player of the Week, MLB announced Monday afternoon.
O’Neill earned the honor after going 9 for 21 (.429) with four home runs, eight RBI, three doubles, a walk, rive runs scored and a 1.578 OPS over five games last week. The 29-year-old tied for the MLB lead in extra-base hits (7), led the AL in slugging (1.143) and total bases (24), tied for the AL lead in homers and RBI and ranked third in OPS.
O’Neill also had two games with multiple home runs, hitting two homers each last Tuesday at Colorado and on Saturday against the New York Yankees. Those marked the ninth and 10th multi-homer games of his career, and this season he leads the majors with five, including three in a six-game span between July 20-27.
The last Red Sox hitters to record at least five multi-homer games in a season were J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts, each of whom accomplished the feat in 2019.
Overall O’Neill is batting .271 with 22 home runs and a .913 OPS in his first season with the Red Sox. San Diego Padres right-hander Dylan Cease earned National League Player of the Week honors after throwing the second no-hitter in Padres history this past Thursday.
