Thune’s Spineless Betrayal: Why Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s Cowardice on the SAVE America Act Proves He Doesn’t Work for the American People

By Stephen Zogopoulos, USNN World News

In the halls of the U.S. Senate, where bold leadership is supposed to define the Majority Leader, we are witnessing something far more pathetic: outright cowardice. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) is actively undermining the SAVE America Act—a bill that has passed the House of Representatives with strong Republican support and enjoys overwhelming backing from the American people. This isn’t just political gamesmanship. It’s a direct slap in the face to voters who sent Republicans to Washington to deliver on election integrity, not to cower before Democratic filibusters and Senate “traditions.”

Let’s be crystal clear about what the SAVE America Act actually is, because the mainstream media won’t tell you. Officially known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (H.R. 7296), this legislation requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—think passport, birth certificate, or naturalization papers—to register to vote in federal elections. It also mandates photo ID at the polls. No more loopholes for non-citizens. No more reliance on self-attestation that Democrats have exploited for years. The House passed it decisively last month, and President Donald J. Trump has rightly called it his “No. 1 priority,” vowing not to sign any other legislation until it reaches his desk—potentially expanded to ban most mail-in ballots except for military, illness, disability, or travel, while also addressing transgender athletes in women’s sports and protecting minors from irreversible procedures.

Polls don’t lie: Trump himself has highlighted that this is an 88% issue with voters across the board. Elon Musk, the visionary behind SpaceX and Tesla who has repeatedly put his platform and influence behind America First causes, echoed that reality just days ago. In a direct public call-out, Musk posted to his millions of followers: “@LeaderJohnThune Pass the SAVE act. That’s what an overwhelming majority of Americans want.” He amplified grassroots efforts, urging Americans to flood Thune’s offices with calls and declaring, “Let Senator Thune know that you support saving democracy in America. We must pass the SAVE Act!”

President Trump has been even more forceful. In recent days, he’s hammered home that Thune “has got to be a leader” and “find the votes.” Trump warned House Republicans that passing this bill is essential to securing Republican majorities in the midterms. He’s made it plain: no more business as usual until election security is locked down.

So what has Thune done? The opposite of leadership.

In closed-door meetings and public statements this week, Thune has repeatedly thrown cold water on the bill. He told Senate Republicans point-blank: “The votes aren’t there” for a talking filibuster or any procedural move to force Democrats to actually debate on the floor. He’s admitted he can’t “guarantee an outcome” and is eyeing a quick, doomed symbolic vote next week—just enough to say he tried, without risking any real political capital. Thune has rejected Trump’s push to reform or pressure the filibuster rules, insisting “that’s not going to happen” and that “passage is not guaranteed.” This from the man who holds the gavel in a Republican-controlled Senate.

This isn’t prudence. This is cowardice wrapped in procedural excuses.

Thune knows the American people are demanding this. He knows non-citizen voting isn’t some conspiracy theory—it’s a documented vulnerability that undermines every legal vote cast by citizens. He knows the House already did its job. And he knows the President of the United States and one of the most influential voices in the world, Elon Musk, are publicly calling him out for failing to deliver.

Yet here he stands, prioritizing “Senate rules,” “math,” and quiet backroom deals over the will of the voters who just gave Republicans the majority. So the question every American should be asking is this: Who does John Thune really work for?

Is it the people of South Dakota who elected him? Clearly not—the overwhelming majority of them, like the rest of the country, want secure elections. Is it the Republican base that delivered the Senate? Doesn’t look like it. Thune’s hesitation smells more like loyalty to the Washington establishment: the lobbyists, the corporate donors, the never-Trump holdouts, and the cozy club of senators who fear rocking the boat more than they fear betraying their constituents.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this pattern from Thune. He’s long been the polite face of Senate Republican leadership—affable, institutionalist, quick to compromise when the spotlight fades. But in a moment when the country faces existential threats to its democratic process—open borders, rampant illegal immigration, and documented cases of non-citizens on voter rolls—politeness is weakness. Cowardice disguised as caution.

Elon Musk sees it. President Trump sees it. And the American people see it. Grassroots activists like Scott Presler are organizing call campaigns to Thune’s offices in Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and D.C., and Musk is amplifying those efforts. The pressure is building because voters understand what’s at stake: If we can’t even require proof you’re a citizen to vote, what exactly is left of our republic?

Senate Majority Leader Thune has a choice. He can step up, whip the votes, force the debate, and deliver the SAVE America Act—or he can continue hiding behind “the votes aren’t there” and reveal himself as just another swamp creature who talks a big game about conservatism but folds when it counts.

The American people didn’t elect Republicans to manage decline. They elected them to fight. If Thune can’t or won’t lead that fight, then perhaps it’s time for new leadership in the Senate. The midterms are coming, and voters have long memories. Pass the SAVE America Act. Secure our elections. Or get out of the way.

The clock is ticking, Senator. America is watching.
