Medfield exacts revenge on Nauset with ‘defensive masterclass’

BOURNE — Nearly one year ago, Medfield fell to Nauset in the Division 3 state championship game in heartbreaking fashion. In its first chance at redemption, Medfield fell to Nauset 4-1 in a regular-season matchup on Jan. 3

Gifted another shot in the Div. 3 state semifinals Sunday, Medfield did not disappoint, securing a 5-0 victory behind a 39-save shutout from Louie Slesar that sent it back to TD Garden.

“This is an unbelievable group of kids,” Medfield head coach Jon Jepson said. “They stepped up, filled new roles and now they are here celebrating. A great, special group.”

Medfield quickly lit the lamp in the first period when captain Matt Dickson finished a third-chance opportunity with a hard backhand from the back door. This gave Medfield a boost that led to some offensive pressure before Nauset upped the ante in the later stages of the frame.

Fortunately for Medfield, Slesar was feeling strong in the crease.

“There are some games where you are iffy on the puck, you’re not seeing it well or you’re seeing two pucks,” Slesar said. “Today was not one of those days. It was one puck all day.”

Nauset closed the first period on a power play and opened the second period on that same advantage. However, just after the penalty expired, Luke Dickson picked up a loose puck from a Nauset turnover and buried it into the top corner.

“Honestly, I wasn’t ready for an offensive chance. I was in PK mode,” Luke Dickson said. “It popped out, I flipped that switch to offense, and I scored.”

Nauset continued to pile on shots, but the Medfield defensive core limited quality chances and kept shots to the outside.

“We’ve been getting better all year on defense,” Jepson said. “We have two defense pairs that are both freshmen; there’s a lot of growing throughout the year. They have been playing with more and more confidence as the season went on.”

Nauset came out blazing in the third period, producing some significant chances that forced Medfield defenders to retreat into the crease and clear the puck out of harm’s way.

“There were some chances where the puck was sitting on the goal line and our guys just dug it up,” Matt Dickson said. “That’s the type of stuff you need to do to win hockey games.”

After finally getting the puck into the offensive zone, Jack Blake ripped a shot from the top of the circle that beat Warriors goalie Patrick Shea and extended the lead to 3-0.

Nauset continued to press, outshooting Medfield, 39-24, in the contest, but Slesar and the defensive core was stifled any further chances.

“Today was spectacular,” Slesar said. “Nauset is a great team, they have one of the best offenses we have played. This was a defensive masterclass from the boys out there today.”

Freshman Max Abramson added another insurance goal and eventually an empty-netter that sealed the victory and sent Medfield back to TD Garden.

The Warriors will try to secure the program’s first state championship since 2016. Matt Dickson said the team knows what is at stake and will be ready to roll.

“It is so special,” Matt Dickson said. “Last year, with it being the first time, you’ve got jitters. This year, we have some unfinished business to take care of. I’ll be ready to go on Sunday.”
