Nauset dominates Scituate, sets up rematch of 2025 state final

BOURNE — Nauset has made trips to the Div. 3 state semifinals a habit in recent seasons.

A dominant offensive showing and a near-perfect performance by Patrick Shea in the crease propelled the No. 2 Warriors to a 6-1 victory over No. 7 Scituate on Thursday in the MIAA Division 3 boys ice hockey quarterfinal at Gallo Arena.

“It’s obviously great, third time in a row for the seniors and juniors who have been on the team,” senior assistant captain Logan Miller said. “It’s a great feeling and we are going to have a lot of confidence going in.”

This was a rematch of the 2025 Div. 3 semifinals, which Nauset took in a similar fashion at 8-0. However, when the Warriors and Sailors met on Jan. 28 of this season, Nauset only came away with a 2-1 win that required overtime.

Warriors head coach Connor Brickley said that team health and getting back to its structure was crucial in having a more convincing result this time.

“The previous game was senior night, we had a few guys out with injury and they got a jump on us in the first six or seven minutes of the game,” Brickley said. “To be honest, the name of the game this whole year has been trying to get healthy with our full lineup and making sure we are playing a character game.”

The Warriors controlled play in the first period, outshooting the Sailors 15-8 despite 13 blocked shots. The Sailors also had a few quality looks that Shea handled with ease.

Scituate netminder Mark Francis was excellent in the frame, making several athletic stops to keep the game scoreless. However, a Scituate penalty late in the period gave the Warriors the space it needed, and Sam Mayhew tipped a wrist shot from Miller into the net to establish a 1-0 lead.

The second period featured an early push from Scituate before Nauset completely took over. The Warriors outshot the Sailors 20-5 and added four more goals to the scoreboard.

The first game from Alex Schiffenhaus, who collected a pass from Oscar Escher and fired it into the top corner. Two minutes later, Mayhew found some space, deked to his backhand, and beat Francis to increase the lead to three.

The onslaught didn’t stop there, with Nauset keeping the puck in the zone and forcing the Sailors to consistently ice the puck for relief. Seamus Shanahan and Zack Weiner added the additional tallies before the break.

“The last couple of games of the season, they started to play to our team structure, play to our details, play to our identity and play more aggressively,” Brickley said. “This was a game that came to full fruition based on that.”

Oscar Escher increased the lead to 6-0 early in the final frame before Sailors sophomore Marty Monahan broke the shutout with a nice goal late in the period.

The Warriors now await another postseason rematch from last year in the semifinals in No. 3 Medfield. Nauset defeated Medfield 4-1 in the Div. 3 championship game last March and also beat it by the same score on Jan. 3 of this season.

Despite the past wins, Miller said Nauset understands the talented team that awaits and is eager for the matchup.

“It’s always fun to play in the playoffs against the teams you played in the regular season,” Miller said. “If you win, they are coming even harder to try to beat you. It should be fun.”
