AG’s Office sees historic number of consumer complaints

Tens of thousands of people complained to the Attorney General’s Office last year about consumer issues — the highest number of complaints the office has ever seen — with health care and housing complaints topping the list of issues for Bay Staters.

There were more than 47,000 calls to the office’s consumer hotline and over 24,000 complaints, according to AG’s 2025 Consumer Advocacy Annual Report. That’s up from about 41,000 calls and 23,000 complaints in 2024.

Like last year, the most common type of complaint was about health care services, the report said, but landlord-tenant issues closely followed.

While the health care complaints are on par with 2024, the tenant/landlord complaints are up by more than a third.

The office said that legislative changes to eviction sealing and broker fees, as well as new guidelines released by the AG, “likely contributed to more consumers filing complaints in this category.”

In response to the complaints received, the AG’s office said it secured more than $11 million for consumers through their advocacy. Additionally, they won more than $187 million through judgements and settlements.

“I am proud to release this year’s Consumer Advocacy Report, which shows how our office is leading the way on consumer and civil rights protections from cracking down on hidden junk fees to obtaining a $165 million judgment against health insurance companies that misled consumers,” AG Andrea Joy Campbell  said in a statement.

Along with the release of the report, which came during National Consumer Protection Week, the AG’s office said there would be events held around the state to help consumers learn more about their rights and how to avoid getting scammed.
