Upset avoided: Mansfield holds off Danvers to advance in Div. 2 tournament

MANSFIELD — After a week of snow cancellations due to the historic blizzard of 2026, Mansfield ended the week by fighting off a tough Danvers team 51-48 in the first round of the Div. 1 girls basketball tournament on Friday evening.

No. 12 Mansfield (13-8) came into this match after losing the Women’s Round Ball Tournament to Natick on Feb. 18. No. 21 Danvers (19-1) is coming off a historic campaign, where it entered on a 16-game winning streak, with the lone loss coming against Hamilton-Wenham on Dec. 29.

“I’m super excited to get past a very talented Danvers team,” said Mansfield head coach Heather McPherson. “Kudos to (Angielouise Djoko), such a strong presence and so athletic. It wasn’t just the finishing in the middle, but the way she stove and attacked the basket. I thought that was difficult to defend.”

Katelyn Triolo led the way with 26 for the Hornets, including going 14-for-17 from the charity stripe, and was the only player in double figures for Mansfield, as Maggie Vallett was the next leading scorer with seven.

Djoko led Danvers with 25, including an 8-for-14 mark from the line. She was followed by Annabel Boyd with eight points and Kendall Murphy with six points.

Danvers started strong, jumping out to a 7-2 lead early in the first. Mansfield cut it down to one point after a pair of free throws from Vallett, but Danvers responded with five straight points, a run that started with a three-pointer from Kayda Brown. Mansfield pulled it down to one point at the end of the quarter after Triolo hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws.

The Falcons held the lead for most of the second quarter, until Triolo went to the line again and made both of her shots, leading Mansfield to take its first lead of the game. Hailey Nieratko nailed a three-pointer before the buzzer to give the Hornets a slight lead at the half.

Danvers took a bunch of free throws to start the third, and Djoko and Sienna Lynch both made two of those shots from the stripe. Murphy later tied the game up at 30, after Mansfield took another lead. Mansfield was able to finish out the quarter with the lead, as Maddie Boyle knocked it down from beyond the arc, and Sophie Clang made her last shot of the only trip to the line for her tonight, as the Hornets had a 34-30 lead.

Triolo took it into another gear in the fourth, constantly going to the line, including the final offensive play of the game for Mansfield, as she picked off a pass, and had a fast break, and then fouled while taking a layup, and then knocked down both of her free throws, as she put the game away with 10 seconds left, and a five-point lead. Djoko put the final two points of the season for the Falcons, at the buzzer, as their historic season ended in Mansfield.

The Hornets move to the second round where they will face No. 5 Minnechaug or No. 28 Leominster.
