Hanover rises up to take down Falmouth in Crosby Couto Championship
SOMERSET — Hanover continued its dominant season Tuesday at the Crosby Couto Tournament at Somerset-Berkley, taking the tournament title with a 61-45 victory over Falmouth.
Hanover (19-1) and Falmouth (14-6) faced off after winning against the host Somerset-Berkley and King Phillip, respectively, in the opening round on Monday. Hanover never gave up its lead after an 8-8 tie in the first quarter, despite an attempt at a comeback in the third by the Clippers, leading into its victory.
Ryan Mutschler led the Hawks with 21, followed by Sebastian Brown with 11 and Samuel Light with 10, including making three from beyond the arc. Sam Stoermer led with 17 for Falmouth, Jameson Cassidy had eight, and Max Peterkin had seven.
“This tournament always prepares us for the MIAA Tournament, because it’s teams in a higher division,” Hanover coach Nick Hanigan said. “You have programs like Somerset-Berkley that is coming off a state championship, so they have that championship pedigree, no matter how many kids they have back.”
The first quarter started with a 4-0 lead after back-to-back buckets by Mutschler. Falmouth tied it up at eight with a minute and a half left in the quarter. Hanover took back the lead, and then Kaden Domino cut it back to two for the Clippers after a steal by TreChaun Days near their basket. In the final seconds, Mutschler heaved up a half-court shot and made it in for a 17-12 lead to end the opening quarter. Bradley Peterson made two threes in the first for the Hawks.
After the halfcourt shot, Hanover rattled off a 10-0 run to start the second and kept the momentum going on their side with Light knocking down two threes for the Hawks, and they ended the half with a 34-25 lead.
Falmouth threatened to come back in the third quarter with Stoermer scoring seven in the quarter, and efficiency at the free throw line, where the Clippers went 6-of-7. This brought Falmouth’s deficit to as low as four points, and Hanover held a narrow 43-37 the end of the quarter.
Hanover sealed the championship in the fourth quarter with Jacob Lyons, Cole Madden and Light all making threes and going 5-of-8 from the line. The Hawks defense also took over and kept Falmouth to just eight points in the quarter.
Light, Mutschler, and Daniel McAvay made the All-Tournament team for the Hawks, while Brown earned MVP honors. Stoermer was the lone Clipper to get an All-Tournament team nod.
“It’s always a goal of us to go and win the tournament at the end of the year, having such a great season,” Brown said. “I don’t usually get the honor of MVP, I usually work down low. So it feels pretty good to win this.”
