Girls hockey: Dodge County’s OT winner sets up rematch with Warroad in Class A state quarterfinals
Dodge County’s Taryn Wernecke hadn’t scored a goal in more than a month.
But when her team needed her most on Wednesday, she delivered.
With just 70 seconds remaining in the first overtime session, Wernecke found her way toward the middle of the ice and turned on a no-look centering pass from Daisy Harens, sending the puck to the top left corner for the game-winning goal as the fourth-seeded Wildcats beat fifth-seed Proctor/Hermantown 3-2 in the Class A quarterfinals at Grand Casino Arena.
The defending champions will meet top-seed Warroad in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul in a rematch of last year’s title bout.
Warroad beat Luverne 5-1 in Wednesday’s opening quarterfinal as Vivienne Marcowka scored a pair of goals and Olivia Anthony tallied three points on a day the Warriors outshot Luverne 44-16.
Dodge County raced out to a 2-0 lead on Wednesday, but Proctor/Hermantown responded with a pair of goals in the second period from Rylee Kalkbrenner and Grace Nichols to knot the score.
Faith Humphrey finished with 24 saves for Dodge County, including 13 straight to close the contest.
