Woman drowns after falling through ice in Cape Cod, authorities search for husband

A woman died after falling through the ice off Eastham on Cape Cod but authorities continue to search for her husband, who they suspect was with her and may have fallen through the ice first.

Eastham Police received a call shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday reporting a loose dog in the First Encounter Beach parking lot. Police arrived and found the dog soaking wet and in apparent stress, according to a police department statement. Then the officer heard screaming coming from Bee’s River.

The officer found a woman struggling to climb out of the water and attempted to help her when the ice gave way under the officer and he also crashed through the ice. Soon, a second officer arrived and in his own attempts to help, the water gave way under him, as well.

While both officers successfully made it back to shore, the woman did not and when the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team and Dive Team members found her, she was already dead, according to the police statement. The officers were transported to a hospital due to their exposure to the frigid water.

Preliminary investigation uncovered evidence that the woman’s husband may have accompanied her in the walk but police didn’t see him anywhere.

“The Tech team is currently continuing to search the water for the husband,” Eastham Police said. “The area is still an active scene, and the public should avoid the area. The name of the deceased female and the missing male are being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.”
