Patriots’ Drake Maye makes admission about shoulder injury after Super Bowl loss
When Drake Maye and the Patriots landed in the Bay Area a week prior to Super Bowl LX, the star quarterback said he felt he “turned a corner” with his shoulder injury he sustained in the AFC Championship Game.
But Maye revealed following a deflating 29-13 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday that his shoulder injury was still lingering and caused him to seek treatment for it.
Maye told reporters, per WEEI video, that he received a pain-killing injection in his throwing shoulder to try to help him manage the injury.
“My shoulder feels,” Maye told reporters before pausing and shrugging, “they shot it up so not much feeling. It was good to go and felt alright.”
Maye, who was under duress for most of the night against a vaunted Seahawks defense and completed 27-of-43 passes for 295 yards with three turnovers, appeared to have injured his shoulder two weeks ago when took a hard hit from Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga on a third-quarter run. Maye stayed in the game and the first signs that he was dealing with an injury came when he popped up on the injury report with his shoulder ailment Jan. 28. The Patriots didn’t practice that day but was he projected as a limited participant.
The 23-year-old signal-caller was limited in practice the next day, but did not throw in front of the media during the open portion of practice. He then didn’t practice Jan. 30 as he was listed with an illness to go along with the shoulder injury.
Maye told reporters on Opening Night that he threw his normal amount during a Monday practice in the Bay Area and was upgraded to a full participant in the Patriots’ practice session last Wednesday. He also participated fully Thursday and Friday and had no injury designation for the Super Bowl.
Maye didn’t use the injury as an excuse for his subpar performance on the heightened stage. But it couldn’t have helped his shoulder at all that he was battered and bruised by the Seahawks defense. The Seahawks registered six sacks on the star quarterback and Maye was hit a total of 11 times.
