Becki Newton raises the bar in ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’

Becki Newton stands out in Netflix’s hit legal series “The Lincoln Lawyer” with comedic chops that can immediately transform into drama.

The fourth season of Michael Connolly’s LA-set courtroom thriller again revolves around Mexican-American defense attorney Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) as he attempts to get himself, literally, out of jail on a murder charge.

That puts Newton’s Lorna Crane, a newly minted lawyer, responsible for keeping the office afloat as manager.  Do we mention that Lorna, one of Haller’s two ex-wives, is now married to Cisco (Angus Sampson), the firm’s tenacious investigator?

“Yet again, I have another incredible, complicated arc,” Newton, 47, said in a phone interview from Beverly Hills. “Just when I thought Lorna had done it all when she passed the bar last season, she now has her a chance to represent Mickey in court.

“He’s not only her boss, her ex-husband, but I believe Mickey’s the great love of her life. Even though they’re no longer married she truly, deeply cares about him and the thought of him being behind bars obviously affects her work and her ability to manage.

“Even though we’ve seen that she can manage most things, I love that in this season, we see her crack a little bit. Because, as we’ve learned time and time again, when emotion comes in, the ability to represent someone becomes much more complicated.”

Is Lorna the most super positive, upbeat person anyone could ever meet?

“Yes,” Newton allowed. “But she’s also a bull in a china shop. Yes, she’s super positive — but not a people pleaser. That makes it much more fun than just being an optimist.

“Well, maybe she’s a blind optimist with this feeling of, ‘If it’s possible, I can do it’ — even though here she’s really, really tested.

“This season, we see that for the first time even Lorna wonders if she can do it.”

What’s been notable is how Lorna’s clothes, from the beginning, help define her. “We wanted to establish that she’s not someone who would typically be in a legal world,” Newton explained.

“One of the challenges this season was: What does Lorna look like in court? What’s Lorna’s version of professional?

“This really was a challenge. Because for the first couple seasons, she’s in the office with her pug, she’s driving her yellow Mini Cooper. We didn’t have to necessarily think about what was appropriate.

“So this season, trying to figure out how Lorna, who wants to be taken seriously as a lawyer, presents herself in court was a really neat development.

“There were a lot of discussions about: What is appropriate and what is not appropriate? What’s Lorna’s version of professional?

“She’s never,” Newton predicted, “going to wear a black suit.”
